Cloey was appointed Commissioner of the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation in September 2021. Cloey is no stranger to state politics, having served California under three separate Governors. Commissioner Hewlett’s career starts in law enforcement, with Commissioner Hewlett working in the District Attorney’s office in San Francisco. There, she was responsible for prosecuting high-level crimes and conducting special investigations, including cases involving embezzlement and fraud. She was one of the first female police officers hired by the District Attorney’s Office. Cloey then transitioned back to policing, where she was the Police Commissioner for the San Francisco Police Department. During her time in law enforcement, she was instrumental in developing community-based policing and de-escalation training for law enforcement officers. After she left law enforcement, she went to the State Bar of California. She established the Moral Character Unit, which is a requirement for admission to practice law in the state of California. This requirement is still in effect to this day. Cloey has a career based on protecting consumers at the state government level, as she managed numerous state agencies.
